Four bodies of suspected alshabaab militants have been found after the suspects were neutralised on Sunday morning by the Kenya Defence Forces soldiers in Lamu. This was after the militants attempted to breach security into the Manda Airport in Lamu. According to the statement from KDF the attempted breach was successfully repulsed however in the process fire broke out affecting fuel tankers at the airstrip. The KDF now says the airstrip is safe and under their control.
The Somali based alshabaab released a statement on Sunday claiming responsibility of the attack. The militants claim they managed to destroy a light aircraft and am helicopter that was at the airstrip during the attack
Following the attack Manda airstrip was immediately closed indefinitely. Aircrafts that had been scheduled to fly to and from Lamu were forced to cancel their schedules immediately.
Today’s attack is the second in 3 days in the same area. On Thursday three people were killed in a Lamu bound bus that was attacked by alshabaab militants
