Ukur Yattani criticises those opposing his endorsement by community elders.

Former Cabinet Secretary for Treasury and Marsabit’s first governor, Ukur Yattani, has urged those seeking the Marsabit gubernatorial seat from Gabra community to seek the blessing of elders from the six Yaa clans instead of challenging their decisions.

Speaking at his home in Marsabit town on Sunday during a meeting with elders from the six clans, Yattani said some aspirants failed to attend a meeting convened by the elders last week and instead used local FM stations to challenge the resolutions reached.

Yattani said his aim is to ensure all communities in Marsabit are included in his bid to reclaim the governor’s seat for a second term in 2027.

He also promised to include an aspirant from the Rendille community in his final lineup for the 2027 elections, saying this would be part of his efforts to promote inclusivity as he has already picked a running mate from Burji community.

Yattani’s remarks come days after politicians Dr. Roba Duba Sharamo and Chachu Ganya opposed the elders’ decision to endorse Yattani, saying they were not involved in the process.

Meanwhile, Yattani criticised the current county administration, accusing it of underperforming and failing to deliver development to residents.

He claimed that many residents of Marsabit are suffering due to poor leadership and that there is little visible development across the county.
