Supporters of the late former Prime Minister Raila Amolo Odinga in Marsabit County have honoured his political legacy, describing him as a key figure in Kenya’s struggle for constitutional reforms and democratic governance.
Speaking during a memorial event held in Marsabit town on Thursday, Saku Constituency ODM Chairman Adan Aile said Odinga’s political ideals and spirit would continue to live on among Kenyans despite his death.
Aile described the late opposition leader as one of the key figures in the struggle for constitutional reforms that culminated in the promulgation of Kenya’s 2010 Constitution.
The event brought together ODM supporters and members of the public to mark the first anniversary of Odinga’s death. Participants lit candles in his honour as they reflected on his contribution to the country’s political development.
Marsabit County Chief Officer for Public Service and Administration Amina Challa said supporters from the county had turned out to celebrate Odinga’s legacy, noting that the anniversary evoked mixed emotions among those who admired his leadership.
Meanwhile, Hido Hassan, one of the event’s organisers, described Odinga as a leader who consistently stood up for the rights of Kenyans and held the government accountable whenever necessary.
Human rights activist Hassan Mohammed praised Odinga for championing the interests of pastoralist communities, adding that his contribution to constitutional reforms and the protection of citizens’ rights would remain an important part of Kenya’s history.
