Residents build temporary huts for teachers at Songa Mixed Secondary School

Residents of Leyai and Songa, Marsabit County have begun constructing traditional manyatta huts at Songa Mixed Secondary School to serve as temporary accommodation for teachers.

The residents say their longstanding appeals to the government to provide the school with proper classrooms, dormitories and teachers’ houses have not yielded results, forcing them to take the initiative themselves.

Led by Leyai Parents and Teachers Association (PTA) Chairperson Paul Salaga, the community members said the construction of the huts is aimed at encouraging teachers to remain at the school, which primarily serves students from poor households and pastoralist communities.

The residents are now appealing to the government, non-governmental organizations, donors and well-wishers to intervene and support the school in acquiring permanent infrastructure.

They say improved facilities would enhance the learning environment and help attract and retain teachers at the institution.
