Number of Ethiopians fleeing to Kenya through Moyale surpasses 50,000

The number of Ethiopian nationals fleeing into Kenya through Moyale following ongoing clashes in the neighbouring country has surpassed 50,000, according to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR).
The figure has risen from approximately 40,000 recorded over the weekend as the fighting in Ethiopia enters its eighth day.
UNHCR says women and children make up the majority of those displaced, with some seeking shelter with relatives and host communities, while others are staying in schools and churches.
The agency has identified food as an urgent priority, adding that the displaced population also needs clean water, temporary shelter, healthcare services and sanitation supplies.
Meanwhile, the first baby has been born amid the ongoing displacement crisis in Moyale.
The Kenya Red Cross says its response team referred the mother to hospital, where she delivered safely. Both the mother and newborn are reported to be in good health.
The humanitarian agency says it continues to screen children and mothers in displacement camps for malnutrition while providing nutritional support and breastfeeding assistance to new mothers.
