Marsabit security team to target wines and spirits shops

Security agencies in Marsabit County are set to target retail shops selling wines and spirits as part of an intensified crackdown on illicit alcohol and drug abuse.

Marsabit County Commissioner Stanley Kamande said the operation will shift to wines and spirits outlets after authorities conclude the ongoing crackdown on the production of illicit brews, particularly chang’aa.

Kamande said the move is part of a 100-day operation being conducted by security agencies in collaboration with the National Authority for the Campaign Against Alcohol and Drug Abuse (NACADA) to combat alcohol and drug abuse.

Police in Marsabit town have so far seized more than 20,000 litres of chang’aa from Dub Goba, Manyatta Ginda and Badassa areas in September alone.

The authorities have vowed to sustain the crackdown as they move to disrupt the production, sale and distribution of illicit alcohol across the county.
