Garri professionals call for unity ahead of 2027 General Elections in Kenya

The Marsabit Garri Professionals Association (MAGPA) has called for unity among members of the Garri community ahead of the next General Election.

Speaking in Marsabit town after the association’s annual general meeting, MAGPA representative Ali Hassan Ali Hassan Mohamed said the meeting elected the association’s officials for the year.

The meeting was also attended by four representatives of the Garri Council of Elders from Moyale, led by their chairman, as well as four sheikhs representing the Garri Chapter in Marsabit-Saku.

Hassan said the community had agreed to unite youth, women’s groups, elders, the Council of Elders and professionals under one common agenda.

He said the Garri community’s vote would remain in Marsabit County and would not be moved to Mandera or any other region.

“We have agreed that the vote of the Garri family and community will not move to Mandera or anywhere else. We will ensure that we cast our vote here in Marsabit County,” Hassan said.

He added that the community had set December as the deadline for consultations on the political position it would take in the next election.

Hassan said the community would use the period to determine which seat it would seek, as well as the candidate or political alliance it would support.

He said the decision would give prospective candidates time to prepare.

Hassan clarified that the community had not yet endorsed any governor, candidate or political lineup.

He said the Garri community would continue consultations until December before making a decision on whether to support a particular governor or political alliance, and which position it would pursue.

He also pledged that the community would promote peace and maintain harmonious relations with other communities living in Marsabit County.
