Emerging land and resource disputes identified as key concerns ahead of 2027 elections in Marsabit

Disputes surrounding community land registration, boundary conflicts, tensions in the Dabel gold mining areas, and concerns over carbon credit revenues have been identified as some of the emerging issues that require urgent attention in Marsabit County as the country prepares for the 2027 General Election.

The concerns emerged during a two-day forum aimed at strengthening unity, peace, and cooperation among different communities. The meeting brought together stakeholders from various religious groups and other peace actors.

The forum was organized in Marsabit town by the Inter-Religious Council of Kenya (IRCK).

Speaking after the meeting, Hassan Mulata of the Initiative for Progressive Change said addressing the identified issues would help promote political tolerance and sustain peace as the country heads towards the 2027 elections.

Marsabit Peace Committee Chairperson Sora Guyo urged political leaders in the county to refrain from making statements that could fuel divisions and undermine peace.

Meanwhile, Supreme Council of Kenya Muslims (SUPKEM) Marsabit branch Chairperson Omar Qutara called on residents not to allow themselves to be divided along religious lines. He emphasized the importance of respecting one another’s faith and religious beliefs as a foundation for peaceful coexistence.

Participants at the forum underscored the need for continued dialogue and collaboration among communities to address emerging challenges and maintain harmony in the county ahead of the next general election.
