A G3 rifle that was seized from a National Police Reservist (NPR) officer on Monday in the Lorachi area of Loiyangalani Sub-County has been recovered and returned.

Marsabit County Police Commander Leonard Kimaiyo said the firearm was recovered through the efforts of National Government Administration Officers (NGAO) working in collaboration with community elders.

The rifle was taken after NPR officers visited the home of a suspect wanted in connection with a defilement case with the intention of arresting him. However, the suspect resisted arrest.

According to the police, the suspect sought assistance from his associates to prevent his arrest, leading to a fierce exchange of gunfire between the group and security officers.

The suspects later fled after running out of ammunition, leaving behind two firearms—an AK-47 rifle and an FN rifle which were subsequently recovered by police officers from Loiyangalani Police Station.

Later that evening, the suspects allegedly attacked one of the NPR officers, assaulted him and seized the G3 rifle.

The firearm has since been returned following intervention by NGAO officers and community elders, according to the county police commander.
