Kenya expands support for persons with disabilities

More Kenyans living with disabilities are accessing financial, educational and social support as the country continues to strengthen disability inclusion programmes.

Data from the National Council for Persons with Disabilities (NCPWD) shows that the agency’s annual budget has increased from Sh1.9 billion to Sh2.1 billion over the past four years.

The additional funding has supported the expansion of several programmes targeting persons with disabilities across the country.

During the period, 330,970 persons with disabilities were newly registered, while 17,777 people received assistive devices to help improve their independence and participation in daily activities.

The number of beneficiaries receiving cash transfers also increased significantly, rising from 38,118 to 63,960, providing additional financial support to vulnerable households.

Support has also been extended to education and community-based initiatives. A total of 12,105 learners received bursaries, while 365 groups of persons with disabilities were awarded grants to support their activities.

In addition, 99 institutions received infrastructure support aimed at improving service delivery and making facilities more accessible.

The figures point to an expanding national effort to promote inclusion, improve access to essential services and strengthen support systems for persons with disabilities.
