KCSE candidates relocated from Sessi and St Mary’s secondary schools in Moyale over security fears

By Caroline Waforo

KCSE candidates from Sessi and St Mary’s secondary schools in Moyale Constituency, Marsabit County, have been relocated to Sessi and Heilu primary schools respectively over security concerns linked to ongoing fighting in neighbouring Ethiopia.

Confirming the relocation, Moyale Deputy County Commissioner Benedict Munywoki said an explosive device had landed within Sessi Secondary School before being defused by Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) officers.

He said additional security measures had been put in place to safeguard the candidates and ensure the smooth administration of the national examinations.

Meanwhile, Marsabit County Director of Education William Kamugunah has assured candidates and parents that the presence of Ethiopian nationals seeking asylum in Kenya will not disrupt the ongoing KCSE examinations.

Kamugunah said adequate measures had been put in place to ensure the examinations proceed without interruption despite the prevailing security situation in Moyale, along the Kenya-Ethiopia border.

More than 50,000 Ethiopian nationals have crossed into Kenya through Moyale while fleeing ongoing fighting in their country in search of safety.

The growing displacement has raised concerns over the potential impact on essential services, including education, in the border region.
