Child abuse cases rise in Marsabit central during school holiday

Cases of child abuse increased in Marsabit Central during the recently concluded school holiday, according to the Department of Children Services.

Speaking to Radio Jangwani, Marsabit Central Children’s Officer Leaky Mukanzi said the region has witnessed a rise in incidents involving children despite government efforts to curb abuse and protect minors.

Mukanzi noted that some cases are resolved outside the court system, making it difficult for authorities to prosecute suspects due to a lack of evidence. He said the practice has contributed to many offenders escaping justice.

The officer also raised concern over outdated cultural practices that continue to hinder children’s access to education. He said some families do not allow all their children to attend school, with some being kept at home to herd livestock.

According to Mukanzi, the situation has led to a sharp decline in school attendance, with enrolment dropping from nearly 100 per cent at the beginning of the year to about 60 per cent during the third term.

He further urged parents to remain closely involved in their children’s lives and monitor their behaviour, saying parental guidance is critical in preventing drug and substance abuse among young people.

Mukanzi also called on parents and guardians to provide proper care, moral guidance and support to ensure children grow up in a safe and conducive environment.
