Catholic Bishops reaffirmed commitment to Anti-Corruption efforts through partnership with EACC

The Catholic Church in Kenya has reaffirmed its commitment to promoting integrity, accountability and ethical leadership through a strengthened partnership with the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC).

The commitment was made during a consultative meeting between officials of the EACC and a delegation from the Kenya Conference of Catholic Bishops (KCCB), led by Caritas Kenya National Director Samwel Omondi, who represented the KCCB General Secretary, Very Rev. Fr. James Waweru. Also present was Dennson Machuki, Communication Strategist at the Loyola Centre for Media and Communications.

The meeting focused on identifying practical and sustainable areas of collaboration aimed at combating corruption, promoting ethical governance and encouraging citizens to reject corrupt and unethical practices.

Speaking during the discussions, EACC Vice Chairperson Dr. Monica Muiru described corruption as one of the greatest obstacles to Kenya’s social, economic and political progress. She emphasized that addressing the vice requires the collective participation of all sectors of society, including religious institutions.

Dr. Muiru noted that faith-based organizations play a critical role in shaping moral values, influencing behaviour and inspiring communities to embrace integrity and accountability in public and private life.

EACC Chief Executive Officer Abdi A. Mohamud praised the Catholic Church’s extensive grassroots presence across the country, saying it offers a strategic platform for advancing ethical leadership and fostering a culture of accountability.

He expressed confidence that the engagement would pave the way for a structured partnership capable of delivering measurable results in the fight against corruption.

On behalf of the Catholic Bishops, Omondi reiterated the Church’s readiness to work closely with the Commission in advancing ethics and anti-corruption initiatives. He said the Church remains committed to its prophetic mission of promoting justice, truth and responsible stewardship in society.

Omondi further highlighted the Catholic Church’s wide communication network, including radio stations, diocesan structures, parish communities and social platforms, as effective channels for spreading messages of integrity and civic responsibility.

The renewed collaboration reflects the Catholic Church’s continued teaching that corruption is a moral evil that undermines human dignity, deprives communities of essential services and weakens efforts toward the common good.

The engagement forms part of EACC’s broader strategy of working with faith-based organizations to promote good governance, prevent corruption and strengthen ethical values across the country.

Church leaders expressed hope that the partnership will empower communities to become active agents of integrity and accountability, contributing to a more just and transparent society.
