Pastoralist communities in Golbo and Sagante/Jaldesa turn to beekeeping and kitchen gardening to diversify livelihoods

Pastoralist communities in Golbo and Sagante/Jaldesa are turning to beekeeping and kitchen gardening as alternative sources of income and food, in a move aimed at reducing reliance on livestock keeping.

Community members involved in Common Interest Groups CIG’S in the two areas participated in a two-day workshop that concluded yesterday, where they received training on beekeeping and kitchen gardening techniques.

According to Mohamed Wario an expert in climate and community resilience at Strategies for Northern Development SND, the training aims to help families increase their income, improve food and nutrition security, and reduce dependence on livestock as their sole source of livelihood.

Wario stated that the initiative also seeks to equip community members with the skills to identify economic opportunities suited to their local environment and strengthen collective efforts to pursue alternative livelihood activities.

The training was conducted by the non-governmental organisation Strategies for Northern Development (SND) in partnership with the Marsabit County Government Department of Agriculture.
