Marsabit youth urged to reject political manipulation ahead of general election

Young people in Marsabit County have been urged to reject political manipulation, particularly as the country moves closer to the next General Election.

Speaking during the International Youth Day celebrations, Marsabit County Department of Sports and Youth Officer Sarr Galgalo called on young people to exercise their democratic right to vote wisely and avoid being used by politicians to fuel violence for personal gain.

Galgalo warned that many youths are often exploited during election periods and later left to bear the consequences of their actions. He encouraged them to make informed decisions and prioritize peace and development.

Meanwhile, Hassan Mulata of the Initiative for Progressive Change challenged young people to stop viewing themselves as leaders of tomorrow and instead position themselves as leaders of today by actively seeking elective positions in the upcoming General Election.

Mulata noted that young people face numerous challenges, particularly in pastoralist communities where age and certain cultural practices often limit their participation in leadership and decision-making processes.

He urged them to overcome these barriers and take advantage of opportunities to contribute to the development of their communities.

On his part, Saku Youth Assembly leader Abdiaziz Boru called on young people to work together in pursuit of their leadership ambitions and to support one another in accessing emerging employment and economic opportunities.

Boru said unity among young people would strengthen their voice and increase their chances of securing leadership positions and benefiting from development initiatives.

The leaders were speaking during celebrations marking International Youth Day, organized by the Marsabit County Department of Youth in collaboration with development partners.

Observed annually on August 12, International Youth Day recognizes the contribution of young people to society, highlights the challenges they face, and promotes their participation in political, social and economic decision-making processes.
