Marsabit residents urged to seek early screening for leukemia

Residents of Marsabit County have been urged to undergo regular health check-ups and seek medical attention whenever they notice unusual changes in their bodies to facilitate the early detection of leukemia.

The appeal was made by Mukoro, a cancer specialist at Marsabit Referral Hospital, who said leukemia is a form of cancer that affects the blood system and causes the abnormal production of white blood cells.

Speaking to Radio Jangwani, Mukoro said certain physical changes may be signs of the disease and encouraged residents to make a habit of visiting health facilities whenever they experience unusual symptoms.

He noted that it has been difficult to determine the exact number of leukemia patients in Marsabit County because some patients do not seek diagnosis and treatment, while others seek medical care outside the county.

Mukoro also called on doctors and nurses to refer patients showing symptoms that may indicate leukemia for timely medical attention.

He emphasized the importance of early diagnosis, noting that some forms of cancer can be treated successfully if detected in time.
