Marsabit is calm, says commissioner, as youth are warned over hate messages.

Marsabit County Commissioner Stanley Kamande has warned youths using social media to spread hate and incitement among communities in the county that they will face legal action.

Speaking on Sunday, Kamande dismissed claims circulating online that security in Kenya has deteriorated because of the ongoing clashes in Ethiopia, insisting the situation on the Kenyan side is calm.

He accused some young people of posting inflammatory messages online, which he termed a lie. He said the entire county, from Moyale to Merille, is peaceful and residents are going about their business as usual.

Marsabit Peace Committee chairman Guyo Sora urged young people to use the situation in Ethiopia to help civilians fleeing the violence and seeking refuge in Kenya, rather than circulating information that could cause fear and panic.

Sora also criticised some youth allegedly based outside the country for spreading incitement that could endanger peace and unity among Marsabit communities.

“On the Kenyan side, we as a community have no problem, we live in peace,” said Sora, adding that some of those writing such messages “are not even in Kenya.”

He said the government will deal with anyone spreading such messages, wherever they are.
