By Caroline Waforo
Marsabit Governor Mohamud Ali has strongly condemned remarks by Dadaab MP Farah Maalim concerning the ongoing violence in Ethiopia, warning that they could fuel ethnic tensions and escalate unrest in the border region.
Speaking in Moyale during a visit to 4,800 refugees seeking shelter at Odha Missionary School, Governor Ali urged leaders to refrain from inflammatory statements and instead use their positions to promote peace and dialogue.
He also cautioned young people, particularly those from Moyale and Sololo sub-counties, against spreading inflammatory messages on social media, urging them to use digital platforms to promote peaceful coexistence.
The governor further called on security agencies to investigate cases of online incitement and take appropriate action against those found responsible.
Marsabit County Commissioner Stanley Kamande said security agencies were investigating seven people suspected of engaging in incitement.
More than 40,000 Ethiopian refugees have so far sought shelter in various parts of Moyale following the ongoing violence in Ethiopia.
Meanwhile, residents of Marsabit County have been urged to remain calm and refrain from actions that could escalate tensions in the border region.
