Junior Police Officer Dies by Suicide in Garissa County

A junior police officer, Constable Hussein Mohamed Sahal, 25, has tragically died by suicide at his workplace in Liboi, Garissa County. His body was discovered hanging from a cactus tree approximately 50 meters from the camp on the morning of December 20. The motive for the incident remains unclear, and initial observations noted bruises on his legs and hands.

Constable Sahal had returned from off-duty on December 19, and colleagues reported no signs of stress prior to his death. This incident forms part of a troubling trend of suicide among police officers, attributed to job-related stress and mental health challenges. Authorities have indicated that officers often bear the weight of community issues and face significant trauma in their roles.

In the same timeframe, at least five other separate suicide incidents were reported, prompting ongoing investigations. Suicide cases in Kenya are on the rise, particularly among men, leading to increased calls for action from the government to address mental health concerns within the police force and beyond.
