The royal couple Prince Harry Markle and Meghan Markle have a pulled a shock to the world by announcing that they are taking a step back “senior members of the Royal Family,” and they are making plans to split their time between the United Kingdom and North America.

The couple announced on Wednesday that “After many months of reflection and internal discussions, we have chosen to make a transition this year in starting to carve out a progressive new role within this institution, we intend to step back as senior members of the Royal Family and work to become financially independent, while continuing to fully support Her Majesty The Queen. It is with your encouragement, particularly over the last few years, that we feel prepared to make this adjustment.”

The Duke and the duchess of Sussex went ahead to say that they are now planning to balance their time between U.K. and North America while continuing to honour their duty to the Queen.  They hope that the geographic balance will enable them raise their son with an appreciation for the royal tradition into which he was born, while also providing our family with the space to focus on the next chapter, including the launch of our new charitable entity.

They added that “We look forward to sharing the full details of this exciting next step in due course, as we continue to collaborate with Her Majesty The Queen, The Prince of Wales, The Duke of Cambridge and all relevant parties. Until then, please accept our deepest thanks for your continued support.”

Signing their statement, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, the couple also posted a photo from the announcement of their engagement in November 2017.

The transition means they will no longer be based full-time in the U.K., the country where the British royal family has reigned for centuries.

Harry is currently sixth in line to the throne, behind his father, Prince Charles, brother, Prince William, and William’s three children George, Charlotte and Louis.
